I've been doing East Coast for quite a while and Lindy for about 6 months or so and taken a blues class. I don't have any balboa but I want to learn. Can I learn anything as a rank beginner, or should I wait and take a few lessons then attend next yar? I'm looking for realistic imput. I'd love to come see the dancing for sure, but I want to learn something without becoming totally frustrated.

Are you thinking about attending Lindy Focus? If so, there is a beginner track that you can take. Not sure if you would be able to keep up in the balboa intensive unless you really dedicate yourself to learning bal now and take private lessons (bal can be a bit of a mindfreak). There are electives at Lindy Focus in multiple levels of blues and balboa, so there should be classes that you can take. I would suggest the Lindy Classics course, Movement or Teaching (even if you don't want to teach Bill Borgida will be able to explain things that will help your basic understanding of the dance and that in itself will push your dancing higher).

Hope that this helps. Are you taking classes with us?

The beginner track in EBC has always been tailored to complete beginners and approach it as if you've never taken or maybe dabbled in it briefly. In the past, they've always started with the basic steps and worked itself up from there.

With that said, just knowing the basic steps will go a long way in the beginner workshop. As Chris mentioned, a private lesson wouldn't hurt, if you have the resources. I don't recognize the name, and don't know if I've seen you dance or not to give you a true feedback on how you'll do. But you do have some prior dance experience that will help.

The bottom line is that, on the average, you should be fine taking the beginner class without knowing the basic steps.
