Swingsgiving was a HUGE success! We raised about 600 lbs of food and $127.00! The food bank was extremely grateful. They receive a lot of free perishable foods from Kroger, Food Lion, Panera and Sheetz, but they have to buy canned and boxed food staples. The type of drive that we did saves them money and allows them to feed that many more people.

So thank you for making this one of the best dances in Solely Swing history.

Gary and I are thinking about getting a roommate at our place. I would like to have a dancer just so that we can have blues and such.

None of this is set in stone, but if you're interested, let me know.

San Diego Fusion Exchange (SDFX)
January 8-10, 2010
http://www.sandiegofusionexchange.com

*What is FUSION?*

Tired of hearing all of the "no" in dance? Start saying YES with fusion!

Fusion is the combination of dances in such a way that allows dancers to use all the techniques, connections, and movements of many dances (in particular swing and blues, or blues and tango, or west coast and blues). This is a constant communication from lead to follow (and vice versa) that uses the dancers' knowledge of more than one dance to flow from one dance to another within a song/dance. Fusion is imagination in motion.

*Join us for the San Diego Fusion Exchange!*

3 Days of Classes! 3 Nights of Dancing! Amazing instructor lineup! Tons of DJs! Live Music! Meals included! ...and a LIVE BAND on Saturday night!

For our 3rd year, we're giving you more of what you loved, all in two GORGEOUS venues: 30 minute breaks between classes, free coffee all day and all night long, your favorite instructors, great DJs, and uninterrupted social dancing! Experience the passion of dancing by using the combination of all your dance knowledge (whether it be blues, west coast, slow lindy, soul, argentine tango, or any other dance) so that you can best create your own style to fit the music.

To make your stay easier, we've arranged a shuttle service between the main venue and the late night venue that will take you back to the hotel. We've also arranged a super special super low $45 rate with the hotel (Jan 1 - 13) so you can walk to the venues in the beautiful California sun.

And wait, there's more: If you live on the West Coast and you'd like to start the party as you travel. We've also arranged a party bus starting in Seattle and picking up in Portland and San Francisco. Contact Kayce Spear (travel coordinator) by November 1st.

*Early Registration Is Already Filling Fast!*

Early registration ends when the early spots are gone, and prices increase as each set of early bird registrations are filled, so please don't wait until the last minute to register!

An all-access pass is a tremendous bargain and includes 3 full days of classes with dancing in-between, 3 nights of dancing from 9 PM - 5 AM, breakfast, lunch, and a late night snack.

*Extra Activities -- Arrive Early, Stay Late -- Disneyland!*

San Diego is sunny and mild, most other places places are cold and wet. Why not give yourself the best dance vacation ever? Start off with Swingin' the New Year in San Diego then stick around for dancing every night, possibly a rock-climbing trip on Wednesday, Disneyland on Thursday (transportation included), and a live band (CJ Hutchinson Band) just for the fusionistas at Ciao Bella on Thursday night (only $8 ). Rock out with the Fusion Exchange from Friday through Sunday. Then enjoy more great dancing at a special alternative Milonga just for us.

Start your year off RIGHT!

Hey swing kids!

Andrew Sutton is coming to Charlottesville November 14-15 to teach lindy-blues fusion workshops! If you’ve ever seen him dance, you know this is a pretty amazing opportunity. He blends blues and tango in an incredibly sexy and musical way. Check out this video of him and Laura Glaess just lesson planning...: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPoldbxYwi0

This event includes eight workshops, two dances, and a late night, as well as a Thanksgiving dinner!

For complete information, here’s the SwingCville website about it: http://www.swingcville.com/workshops/

I really hope to see some of you at this event! At least think about sending your blues and lindy teachers (perhaps club funding?) to increase Solely Swing's repertoire!

Join us October 16-18, 2009 in Richmond, Virginia for Jammin' on the James, a weekend of Lindy Hop workshops and dancing. For our seventh year we are proud to bring back Naomi Uyama & Peter Strom and Nina Gilkenson & Mike Faltesek to teach workshops on Saturday and Sunday. We will have workshops at the beginner, intermediate, and for the first time this year, we'll have two advanced level workshops. We'll also be focusing on our local musical talent for our three main dances and have DJs spinning great tunes for late night dancing. All workshops and evening dances will be held at the intimate and historic Lewis Ginter Recreation Center. Registration will open later this month.

Get all of the details at www.jamminonthejames.com.

See you in Richmond in October!

I've been doing East Coast for quite a while and Lindy for about 6 months or so and taken a blues class. I don't have any balboa but I want to learn. Can I learn anything as a rank beginner, or should I wait and take a few lessons then attend next yar? I'm looking for realistic imput. I'd love to come see the dancing for sure, but I want to learn something without becoming totally frustrated.

From the email that Bryant sent out:

Hi All,

So Google continues to amaze me with their awesomeness—I’ve created the online form using Google docs that we discussed awhile back; it can be used for dance sign-in this weekend.

That link will bring you to the spread sheet linked to the form.

If you want to go to the form—click on the menu item that says “Form (1)” and
“Edit Form” if you want to go the design view or
“Go to Live Form” if you want to see what it looks like when dancers would sign in.

I’ve left a space where we can put the waiver directly on the form, or we can just bring a paper copy and reference it on the form—whatever seems more appropriate. The only reason I think it wouldn’t make sense to have it on the form would be that it makes the form longer than needed and you would have to scroll down to get to the submit button.

Nancy, if you have a copy of the waiver in electronic format, please send it to me and I can see if it looks reasonable on the form—or I you only have the paper copy then we can just reference it if you don’t want to type it into the computer.

MOST IMPORTANTLY—I’m sorry to say that I won’t be here this weekend—therefore, in order to use this form, we will need some volunteers to bring their computers.

One of the cool things about this form is that since it is online all you have to do is go to the webpage and multiple computers can use the form at the same time—so if there are a lot of people—and one computer is not sufficient we can have multiple computers.

Thanks to anyone who wants to help test out the process—I hope that it will be really helpful for signing in and gathering information efficiently.

Regards,
Bryant

Hey Guys,

I'm strongly concidering going to Atlanta Varsity Showdown this year. I stole this from a Gainesville Swingout message:

Registration for this year's Atlanta Varsity Showdown (Oct. 16-18) is now open! We have an amazing instructor lineup this year including Evin Galang, Bill Borgida, Andrew Thigpen and Karen Turman! We're also bringing back the best dance venues and DJs that made AVS so fun last year. In case you haven't attended before, AVS is particularly great for beginners, intermediates and swing scene builders, so come ready to learn! That's three days of social dancing, world-class instruction, competitions and AVS antics for only $50 a person! Visit http://www.aseda.org/avs for more information.

There is a special group rate this year (available for the entire weekend only): $40 per person for groups of 5 to 9, and $30 per person for groups of 10 or more. I'm sure Gainesville can swing at least a carload (we've had a dozen attendees in the past), so that turns out to be an exceptionally sweet deal.

This is Erin! I am not sure how this happened, but somehow someone misheard me and the Minutes say that VT TV is in Squires. IT IS NOT IN SQUIRES! VT TV is done in SHULTZ, on the first floor right next to the cafeteria. If you are not sure where SHULTZ is, I will be there early, so just call me and I will direct you there.

I hope everyone gets this message. See you all later!

Hey so I'm starting this topic because I figure it's going to keep going. :)

I have one note about the waiver. Do not think that a waiver will protect you in court. They do not. They can help, but in law they do not hold up completely.

Just remember that we should prevent any liability (such as airsteps) on our dance floors.

I also hope that we release this new system as a complete product before we start it.
I like the idea too! I know the pain of transferring 50 names onto the listserv....

That's just my 2 cents.

So there have been some questions about the picnic.

When : It's tomorrow, Aug 23rd at about 3 pm lasting until whenever (do you guys want it to be earlier?)

What to bring: This is not a potluck where you are expected to feed tons of people. Bring enough food for yourself and if you want to share, that would be great, but not required. I know that my first email was a little confusing as to that point.

Where: Well, it was going to be at the Duck Pond, but due to the weather I think that might not work out. Who has a rainy day alternative? Maybe the lounge of a dorm?
